We started 2024 in the Marquesan
Islands, about 700 km East of Tahiti. In late of 2023 Neil and Helen did the usual maintenance, and a more than usual amount of repair work in Hiva-Oa. We were in the small but friendly boatyard in Hiva-Oa. With only about 2500 inhabitants, services on the island are of course limited, but the boatyard owner and staff are ingenious, minimizing the difficulty of obtaining spare parts. |

By Christmas we were on Nuku Hiva,
in time for the Matavaa festival, when people from all six inhabited
Marquesan islands met to celebrate their culture. There has been a massive revival of the traditional culture since France eliminated many laws restraining it in 1984 |

Helen flew home in January, and Peter & Heather Tyler joined the crew.
We circumnavigated Nuku-Hiva, stopped briefly at Ua Po, then sailed the 800
miles South to the Gambier archipelago and back to Hiva Oa to lay up for
the season. (Double click any photo to see full size, then use back button to return) |

Neil got home in early March, just in
time for birth of Alec, our first grandson. All went well, and he is now growing beyond the baby stage as his first Christmas approaches. |
The year included a trip to the Rockies with a Danish friend. Also a trip to Montreal for Helen to have knee replacement surgery, which had good results. |
